Women drawing a design to be patented

See how research can improve your AI project

Discover how proper research helped us to identify the ways of improving the AGH AI patent tool.

Project overview
AGH created an AI assistant to support the patenting process, making it easier and more understandable for everyone. Our initial task was to determine whether this product would work in real-life scenarios and how useful it would be for lawyers – both in Poland and across the EU.

Finding the right target group
Our preliminary research indicated that such a tool could be valuable not only for lawyers but also for inventors themselves. Therefore, we proposed expanding the target group to include individuals who want to explore the patenting process on their own.

Finding the best use-case scenario
Interviews with lawyers and inventors revealed that the current version of the tool would not fully satisfy either group. For professional lawyers, it served as a useful verification tool, but since they already have the necessary expertise, they would rarely use an AI assistant in their work. This led us to narrow the lawyer target group to those at the beginning of their professional careers. These early-career lawyers could benefit most, learning from the tool while instantly verifying their assumptions. Another promising group is lawyers outside the EU, who may have limited knowledge of legal processes in our part of the world.

Inventors, on the other hand, found the tool difficult to use because it didn’t function like ChatGPT. Instead, it acted more like an AI lawyer – asking a series of questions first and then providing a detailed recommendation. Inventors preferred a more conversational, thought-sharing experience. This means the current version of the tool should be redesigned to meet inventors’ expectations, shaped by their familiarity with chat-based AI.

How to best approach creating an AI tool
Thorough research into your target groups is essential for the success of any project, especially in AI innovation. Thanks to our research, AGH now has a clearer picture of who the end users of their tool might be and how the tool should be adjusted to better meet their needs.

Be open to feedback and find a partner who will challenge your ideas and help improve the tool before launch. At EDISONDA, we see ourselves as a team of experienced experts dedicated to maximising the chances of success for any new digital tool or service. We don’t just deliver research – we also propose design solutions that make products more useful and meaningful.

What’s next for the AGH AI tool
Supporting the patenting process is a valuable goal, but its execution must be focused on a specific need. Based on our research, we have prepared concrete recommendations, and now we aim to help AGH reshape the tool so it can reach its full potential.
